Kimagure Orange College Episode 41 - Vice Versa, Part 2 [Ikemoto's apartment. Akane is talking to her mother Asako on phone.] Akane: Kazuya got in trouble again. When he was playing at the park, he set off the sprinkler system. Then... Asako: [From the telephone.] That kid... I'll make sure to punish him when he comes home. Akane: ...no, it's worse than that, Mom. Kazuya ran away from some kids that were chasing him, and he bumped into a woman I know. Asako: Bumped into? You mean...? Akane: ...yeah, and so Madoka-chan's roommate is in the body of my brat of a little brother, and there's really no way to explain it away. Asako: Have you tried forcing a switch back? Akane: Kazuya tried to bump heads again, but Ikemoto-san ducked out of the way. That was too obvious; it needs to look like an accident, or she will become even more suspicious. Asako: [Sighs.] You should have called sooner. Akane: Maybe. I was hoping Kyosuke would be back; he and Madoka-chan would really be able to help us out right now. Asako: This incident could reveal our family secret. Your Grandfather.... Akane: [Interrupts.] No, we shouldn't get him involved. I'm afraid he would make things worse. Ikemoto doesn't know about the Power. [Pauses.] She is a very realistic person, and very concerned about others' professional opinion of her. She knows something very strange has happened, but if it were to end right now, she would probably convince herself it was all a very bad, very realistic dream. I don't think she would tell anyone about what happened. Asako: That is good. We need to work on a solution, though. Let me speak to Kazuya. Akane: [Hesistates.] Anoo... he's not here. Asako: You let him disappear? Akane: Actually, I know where he is. He's at the Mason financial corporation office right now. Asako: You let an elementary school student go do a high-powered finance job? Akane: Kazuya was sure he could bluff his way with his Power. Actually, they both insisted they could handle each other's life for one day. Asako: And you let them do that? Akane: Maybe we shouldn't have.... But this day was already bad. How much worse could it become? [Cut to the Mason financial corporation. Inside a large corner office, with windows overlooking the financial district, Ezaki, an older gentleman in a stern suit, sits in a large leather chair.] Ikemoto: [Knocks on the door.] Kacho*, I am here for our meeting. *Section chief Ezaki: Come in, Ikemoto. [Ikemoto sits down. Ezaki slides a folder across his desk to her. Ikemoto opens it and scans through the documents. A look of confusion crosses her face.] Ikemoto: [Thinking.] Ugh, these are really detailed. And I could use a dictionary for some of these words. Che, this is harder than I thought. [Focuses to appear calm.] Ezaki: As you know, Sakurabo Corporation is focusing on investment opportunities in heavy industrial firms in Southeast Asia. They are looking for a detailed analysis of risks and opportunities. Gather recommendations from your co-workers specializing in the industries indicated, and provide a report by the end of next week. Ikemoto: Hai, Kacho. [Concentrates, and reads Ezaki's mind.] My first thought is that the region as a whole, while growing, is at greater risk from a global economic downturn. The nations do not have the infrastructure or political climate to weather this risk. Ezaki: [Nods.] Very good. Ikemoto: [Thinking to herself] Piece of cake! Ezaki: And Ikemoto.... Ikemoto: Hai? Ezaki: You were late this morning. Ikemoto: Yes, I know, but.... [Ikemoto looks at Ezaki's stare, and wilts.] Ikemoto: [To herself.] I don't need to be an ESPer to know what he's thinking. [To Ezaki.] Hai, Ezaki-kacho. Moushiwake arimasen.* There was no excuse for my tardiness. I will not allow myself to reflect poorly upon Mason financial corporation in the future. *I'm sorry. (Humble) Ezaki: That is all. [Ikemoto stands up and leaves Ezaki's office. Ezaki turns to study a report on his desk.] [Cut to Kouryou Elementary School. The students participating in juku* are now having lunch.] *Study program to prepare students for entrance exams. Kazuya: [Sniffs food unappetizingly, then thinks to himself.] Did I really used to eat food like this? [His stomach growls.] It's not like I can go to Ma Maison like this, so I'm stuck eating this cafeteria food. [Kazuya goes to a corner table by himself and starts to eat. Shortly thereafter, a taller male student with dark hair sits down with him.] Yukio: That was great, Kazuya! You really had me fooled with that good student act this morning. Now I know what you were studying last night. Kazuya: [Puts his hand behind his head.] Ah... heh-heh. Yukio: [Leans in conspiratorially.] So where did you learn all those choice English words? I know they're not in our textbook! Kazuya: [Thinks.] Ah... American movies, but don't tell my parents that I've been watching movies like that! Yukio: So, you are going to do your half of the homework for tomorrow, right? And you ARE going to let me see your half, right? Kazuya: Yukio, you should... [Cuts himself off.] Sure. But I might just do all the homework myself. I realize I do need to study more. Yukio: [Looks at Kazuya strangely.] Do you have a fever or something? [Kazuya shrugs.] Ah, suit yourself. It won't bother me if you want to study more. [Cut to Mason Financial Corporation. Ikemoto is sitting at her desk. Numerous soda cans and candy bar wrappers litter her desk.] Ikemoto: [Happily eating a chocolate bar.] [To herself.] This is great! Ikemoto-oneechan has lots of money in her purse, so I don't have to choose just one candy bar from the vending machine! [Unbeknownst to Ikemoto, Ginga is observing her through a crack in her mostly-closed door. A slight smile crosses his face, then he departs.] [Cut to Kouryou Elementary School. Juku has ended, and Kazuya is sitting on a bench outside.] Kazuya: [To himself.] There's really no reason to go home now, until the other me gets home. [Maiko approaches, carrying a brown paper bag.] Maiko: [Waving.] Kazu-kuuuuun! Kazuya: Oh, hi, anoo, Mai-chan. Maiko: You were right, my parents didn't look to see what was in here. [She grins, then opens the bag and pulls out an assortment of small round firecrackers.] Kazuya: [Looking at the firecrackers in Maiko's hand; sniffs a foul odor.] Anoo... what are those.... Maiko: There are enough smoke bombs and stink bombs for each bench in Lover's Park! Kazuya: [Thinking.] Why would she want to do that with Kazuya? Just because it's with Kazuya? [Pushes Maiko's hand back.] Let's not set those today. Maiko: But it was your idea. [Realization dawns.] Oh, I know. You got in big trouble with your sister? Kazuya: [Deadpan.] You wouldn't BELIEVE how much trouble I got into yesterday. [After a pause, Kazuya smiles.] I have a better idea, Mai-chan. Let's go get a soda! [Pats his pockets, then frowns as he finds nothing in them.] Anoo... your treat today, my treat next time? Maiko: [Cheerily.] Un! [Maiko puts the firecrackers back in the bag.] [Cut to Chez Kooun. Kazuya and Maiko are sitting at a table by the window; each has a small soda. Kazuya is idly playing with his straw.] Kazuya: [Thinking to himself.] How long has it been since I've been out like this? This isn't my idea of a date, but still, it's something.... [Aloud] I'm glad we're here. We won't get in trouble here. Maiko: Actually, Kazu-kun, I'm glad we're here too. Kazuya: [Remembers what Maiko said earlier.] Oh, you got in big trouble too? Maiko: No... I mean yes... I mean sort of. My parents don't know, but my older brother does. Kazuya: Older brother? Maiko: Yeah, I didn't know until I got home, but he was playing baseball at the park yesterday, when you turned the sprinklers on. When I went home, he pushed a wet shirt in my hands and threatened to tell Mom what happened. Now, I have to do his chores for a month! Kazuya: At least you didn't get beat up and tied to the monkey bars! [Both kids laugh.] [Cut to Ikemoto's office in the Mason financial corporation. Ikemoto is sitting in her chair, clutching her stomach.] Ikemoto: Ohhh, I shouldn't have had that fifth chocolate bar. [Ikemoto gets up, and gingerly walks out of the office. She approaches the first office lady she sees.] Ikemoto: Miss, I'm not feeling well. Could you please tell the boss I'm taking sick time? OL: Uh, sure, Ikemoto-san. Ikemoto: Thanks, you're the best! OL: [Blinks hard.] Did she just say, "You're the best?" [Cut to a street shot. Maiko and Kazuya are standing outside Chez Kooun.] Maiko: This was fun, Kazuya! Kazuya: I'm... I'm glad you had fun. I better get going. I don't want to get my sister mad! [Cut to the door of Ikemoto's apartment. Kazuya approaches the front door and knocks.] Kazuya: Yukimasa-chan? Are you there? [The door is opened by Ikemoto. She looks pale.] Kazuya: Eh? What are you doing home already? Ikemoto: [Clutching her stomach.] I wasn't feeling good, so I went home. Kazuya: But what about the meeting with Jackson & Stein? Ikemoto: Oh, that didn't go too well. You should have said they'd be doing the meeting in English! At least I wasn't late, like for that conference call. [Kazuya turns red with anger. Despite his height deficiency, Kazuya does his best to get in Ikemoto's face, while Akane stands bemusedly in the background.] Kazuya: You arrived late to an important conference call, blew the negotiation, you made yourself look like a fool, and you took sick time and went home for a stomachache? How could you screw up like that? Ikemoto: [Sheepishly holds up her hands.] I didn't mean to! Kazuya: I've worked hard to get where I am. I've devoted long hours in the office to understand the industry, and to convince the partners that I have what it takes to be a leader at Mason. You don't know how hard it is for a woman like me to get the attention she deserves. Akane: Ikemoto-san.... Kazuya: That's it, you're going to call in sick tomorrow. Ikemoto: But didn't you just say.... Kazuya: It can't possibly be worse than what happened! [The phone rings.] Akane: [Calmly.] Let me get that. [Picks up the phone.] Moshi-moshi? Ah, Ezaki-kacho for Ikemoto-san? Hold on, let me find her. Kazuya: Shimatta! It's the section chief! Ikemoto: I'm not here! Kazuya: You fool, you have to take this call! Ikemoto: Uh... hai. Kazuya: [Hisses.] Be polite when you speak to the kacho. Ikemoto: [Picks up the phone.] Hai, moshi-moshi? [Listens.] 7 A.M.? Yes, I will be there. Good-bye. [Hangs up phone.] Kazuya: What did he say? Ikemoto: Ezaki-kacho wants me to come in to a meeting at 7 A.M. Kazuya: *GULP* Taihen!* *Terrible! [Cut to Mason Financial Corporation. Most offices are empty, and the lights are dim. At one desk, Ginga writes diligently. Another worker passes by; he has his briefcase and coat.] Worker: Working late again, Ginga? Ginga: Yes. Sometimes, it seems like my work never ends. Worker: I know what you mean. I have some reports to review once I get home. Good night. Ginga: Good night. [Ginga hears a bell as in the distance, as the elevator arrives. He hears it close, then listens for any further sound. Confident there is no one here, he stands up, and walks to Ikemoto's office, carrying a briefcase. Once inside, he goes to her desk. He opens a drawer, smiles, and pulls out her hanko*. He takes out two copies of a report from his briefcase and stamps them with the hanko.] *Signature seal/stamp used on legal or formal documents Ginga: [To himself.] Now where is it.... [Ginga searches through the drawers of Ikemoto's desk. He smiles as he finds a report. He pulls it out; it says "An analysis of American automotive investments and distribution in Japan." He replaces that report with one of his own.] Ginga: [Takes the other copy of this fake report.] Excellent. I'm sure Ezaki-kacho will be worried about the quality of Ikemoto's work. [Ginga quietly exits Ikemoto's office, and proceeds to enter Ezaki's office. He tries to open the drawers of a file cabinet, but finds it locked.] Ginga: [To himself.] I see Ezaki-kacho is not as inattentive as Ikemoto-shunin*. But that's not a problem.... *Chief [Ginga takes a paper clip and bends it into a makeshift lock pick. He works the wires into the lock, and after some jiggling, is rewarded by the lock opening.] Ginga: Excellent. [Ginga searches Ezaki's files, and replaces another copy of the automotive analysis with the one he brought. He carefully closes the drawers of the file cabinet, and works the lock closed. Once complete, he exits Ezaki's office.] [Cut to Ikemoto's apartment. It is later that same evening. Both Kazuya and Ikemoto are sitting at the table, working. Kazuya has financial papers and company prospectuses in front of him. Ikemoto has elementary school textbooks and notebooks open in front of her. In the background, Akane is watching television.] Television newscast: In the aftermath of Typhoon 16, the Coast Guard continues to search for several missing craft. Authorities have requested that anyone with information on missing boats contact the Coast Guard. One boat reported missing is that of financier Hayashibara Takao, which was in use by his son... Akane: [Whispers.] Kyosuke. Madoka-chan. Please come back, everyone. [Akane turns off the television and goes into the kitchen.] [Cut to Kazuya and Ikemoto.] Ikemoto: [Puts down her math book in disgust.] Che... this is so boring! Kazuya: You can't give up! You must learn and understand this material to prepare for your future education... [Thinking to her work.] ...even if it is sometimes boring. Ikemoto: But what good is this ever going to do for me? Kazuya: Elementary school math is the building block for all future mathematics. You can't correctly value a derivative instrument in the stock market without knowing multiplication, or fractions, or ultimately, everything you're reviewing here. Ikemoto: [Grumbles.] Some people don't need to value derivative instruments in the stock market. [Akane enters the room with two glasses of juice.] Akane: Are you thirsty, Kazuya? Ikemoto: Che, I can get my own drink if I'm thirsty. [Suddenly, Ikemoto's face alights with inspiration.] Ikemoto: [Telepathically communicating to Akane.] Bring the drink here, but then spill it on the floor. I'll meet you, then slip on the floor and land on Ikemoto! [Aloud.] But on second thought, I am thirsty. So sure, I'll have some. Akane: Okay, Kazuya. [Akane walks towards the table as Ikemoto stands up and moves to meet her. Akane fakes a stumble and the glass slips from her left hand. Ikemoto takes a big step and...] Kazuya: My carpet! [Kazuya drops to the floor to grab the fallen glass, out of Ikemoto's way. At the same time, Ikemoto has stepped in the puddle. She notices the plan has failed, but as she tries to stop her planned pratfall, she loses her balance, and slips for real. Ikemoto falls backwards, banging her head on the table and then the floor.] Ikemoto: Itee... studying is painful. [Cut to Mason financial corporation, the next morning. Ikemoto walks into Ezaki's office, five minutes early. Arima is also present, and is already seated.] Ezaki: [Sternly] Please sit down, Ikemoto. Ikemoto: *GULP* Ezaki: I have called you both here to discuss your... joint presentation for Jackson & Stein yesterday morning. Ikemoto: Hai, Kacho. Ezaki: I want to know what you were thinking, bringing in Arima to negotiate. You realize he doesn't have a broker's license. Ikemoto: I realize that, but... ah... we weren't going to be signing anything today, so that wasn't a problem. Ezaki: [Looks crossly at Arima.] And as for you, Arima, what were you thinking? Arima: [Nervously.] Ah, Ikemoto-shunin was insistent, and I respect all that she has taught me, so I thought this would be good training. And I knew she would not do anything to hurt the company, so I assumed this would work out all right. Ikemoto: [Concentrating, peering into Ezaki's mind.] [Thinking to herself.] So Ezaki-kacho doesn't think much of Arima? That gives me an idea! [Aloud.] I have worked with Arima, and have been impressed with the level of his work, given his short time here at the firm. I have felt, though, that others have not seen his work in the same way. I thought it was time Arima was provided an opportunity to shine. Ezaki: Interesting. I was unaware you felt this way. However, it remains true that the associates of Jackson & Stein did not judge this presentation to be a success. In fact, they called yesterday to tell me they chose to break off negotiations. No matter what you feel, Ikemoto, and no matter how you presented, Arima, the negotiation was a failure. Ikemoto and Arima: [Silence.] Ezaki: I will be paying additional attention to the quality of your work in the future. Do not fail again. Ikemoto and Arima: Hai, Kacho. Ezaki: That is all. [Ikemoto and Arima both leave, depressed. Then, Arima turns to Ikemoto.] Arima: Say, Shunin? Ikemoto: Yes? Arima: Thank you for supporting me back there. I wasn't aware you thought so highly of my work. I mean, you're normally so... [Searches for a word.] curt. Ikemoto: Anoo... you know I have high standards, and you know I'm very busy. Arima: So you're busy, and you aren't able to spend time on pleasantries? Ikemoto: Yes, exactly. [In a lower voice.] Wow, that sounds bad. Arima: [After overhearing Ikemoto's last statement.] Please don't take offense, Shunin. Ikemoto: [Waving her hands.] Iie, I wasn't offended. Now, ah, [Scans Arima's mind.] let's meet to discuss the prospects for the Indonesian petrochemical industry. Arima: Hai, Shunin. [Later at Mason Corporation. Ikemoto is meeting with another associate.] Associate1: So as you can see, the South Korean electronics firms will grow 10 to 12 percent in the near term, but will face continued competition from Taiwanese firms. Ikemoto: [Reading his mind.] Long term, though, the unknown is Chinese exports. China is upgrading its manufacturing capabilities, and expanding its export markets. Associate1: Yes, exactly. You've always been good with analysis, at seeing the big picture, Shunin. Ikemoto: Thank you. Associate1: [Does a double take.] Y-you're welcome, Shunin. Ikemoto: [Stomach growls.] It's going to be lunch soon. Do you want to grab something from the cafeteria? Associate1: Eh? You mean together? Ikemoto: Of course, I mean together. Associate1: You mean you're not eating alone today? Ikemoto: Uh, no. Associate1: Well, I'd love to, but, ah, I have errands to run today. Ikemoto: [Uses telepathy to pick up thoughts of "You couldn't pay me enough to spend lunch with her." She frowns, then puts on a neutral expression.] Well, that can't be helped. I'll talk to you later if I have any further questions. [Ikemoto turns to the worker at the adjacent desk.] Ikemoto: How about you? Want to go to lunch? Maybe yakitori? Associate2: [Nervously.] Ah, sorry, I can't. Maybe another day? Ikemoto: [Uses telepathy to pick up thoughts of "Is 'never' soon enough?" She frowns again.] That's all right. [Cut to scenes of Ikemoto talking to her other subordinates about lunch; they all decline.] Ikemoto: [To herself, after leaving the last employee's desk.] They all say they respect Ikemoto, but no one wants to go out to lunch with her. [Cut to Kouryou Elementary. Kazuya is diligently taking an examination.] Teacher: Time is up. Please pass your exam booklets forward. [Various groans and grumbles come from the students. Kazuya takes the booklets from the students behind him and passes them forward in a businesslike manner.] Kazuya: [Thinks to himself.] I don't know if this Kazuya would have done as well, but there's no way I could bring myself to fill in wrong answers. [The teacher collects all of the examination booklets, then checks to make sure they are all there.] Teacher: Afternoon examinations in English and mathematics will commence in one hour's time. [The students leave, some looking dejected, others grumbling about the exam. Kazuya leaves the classroom without further delay. He gets lunch from the cafeteria, then selects a table where he sits, alone. As he is eating, a skinny male student approaches.] Student: Yukimasa-san? Kazuya: [Looks up.] Yes? Student: I'm wondering, could you help me with this word list? [Sets his English textbook on the table] You see, the book says that you make a verb past tense by adding -ed, but there are a lot of words that don't work that way. How do you remember them all? Kazuya: [Thinks to himself.] How did I first learn that? [Aloud.] First of all, you can't substitute reviewing during lunch one day for a year of careful studying. Student: Okay, but can you help me today? Kazuya: Very well. Try writing down all the words that have irregular conjugations. Then say them out loud. You will remember them, so that when you see them, then you know you need to think about how to write them. Student: There are so many of them! Kazuya. Try combining the words that sound similar. Like these: Bring, sing, ring. Student: Bring, sing, ring? Kazuya: Say it again. Student: Bring, sing, ring! Kazuya: Again! Student: Bring, sing, ring! [Several other students come over to look at the silly scene.] Kazuya: Do you want to pass your English test? Then say it with me. Bring, sing, ring! Students: Bring, sing, ring! Kazuya: [Happily.] Bring, sing, ring! [The bell rings.] Student: Thank you for your help, Yukimasa-kun. I think I like it better when you help me than when you put fresh paint on my chair. Kazuya: Ah-hah-hah. [Puts his hand behind his head.] [Cut to Mason financial corporation. Ikemoto is sitting at her desk, reviewing a stack of documents received from her coworkers. Ginga approaches her desk.] Ginga: Shunin? Ikemoto: Hai, anoo, Ginga-san? Ginga: I know you are working on acquisitions for Tamaribuchi Heavy Manufacturing Concern, and I am hoping you could provide some information to me on the finances of Shimizu Corporation. Ikemoto: [Concentrates and reads Ginga's mind, and frowns with what she finds.] As you know, Ginga-san, those details are strictly confidential. As you are not working on the acquisition, I cannot share the information without the permission of Ezaki-kacho. Ginga: [Smoothly.] This is strictly for personal interest, and neither Ezaki-kacho nor Tamaribuchi need know. So if you change your mind, please come talk to me. [Starts to move away, then turns back.] Oh, and one more thing, Shunin. Ikemoto: Yes? Ginga: I was reviewing one of the reports you compiled earlier this year, and I have some, ah, concerns. Ikemoto: [Frowns.] What is it? Ginga: [Presents the report, opened to a middle page.] Here, you have a discussion about the Chrysler Corporation moving away from arrangements in Asia to focus on the American market. That is, shall we say, a misreading of the market, as the Diamond-Star joint venture and the Illinois manufacturing facility demonstrates. Ikemoto: [Thinking.] What does that mean? [Concentrates, reading Ginga's mind.] [Thinking.] This Ginga created this fake report and is trying to make Ikemoto look bad? That's a nasty plan. Ginga: Now, we both work with this industry, and I am willing to accept full responsibility for providing you this erroneous information. If I don't, then, well, I'm not sure what Ezaki-kacho will say about this poor analysis. I don't think you can afford to be associated with this report right now. [Takes the report back.] Do consider my offer, Ikemoto-shunin. Ikemoto: [With false bravado.] I am confident in my analysis. Now if you don't mind, I do need to get back to work. [As Ginga leaves, Ikemoto shudders.] Ikemoto: [Thinking.] There's something sinister going on. [Ikemoto starts looking through the files at her desk.] [COMMERCIAL BREAK.] [Cut to a jungle scene somewhere in the wilderness of Kyushu. A lone figure, wearing a bandana and carrying a bamboo umbrella and backpack, is pushing his way through the vegetation. He sees another figure ahead.] Ryoga: [Yelling to the figure.] WHERE IS FURINKAN HIGH SCHOOL? [The other figure is a man with glasses and a cell phone at his ear. Not noticing Ryoga, the man takes one step.] Man: Can you hear me now? Good! Announcer: Verizon Wireless. We never stop working for you. [Cut to Ryoga, this time walking across a snowy mountain peak in Hokkaido. He sees a figure ahead.] Ryoga: WHERE IS... [Recognizes it's the same man as before.] Oh, never mind. Man: [Steps.] Can you hear me now? Good! [Writer's note: Standard Disclaimer.] [END COMMERCIAL BREAK.] [Cut to Kouryou Elementary School. Students walk out, visibly drained after a day of tests, but relieved to be finished. Kazuya, Maiko, and Yukio are walking out together.] Yukio: I don't want to do that again, ever. Kazuya: Only once for high school admissions, then again for college admissions. Yukio: Don't remind me. Maiko: I'm glad we're done. What are you going to do until classes start again? Yukio: Not look at a book the whole time. Kazuya: I just hope... things get back to normal. Maiko: Then let's do the normal thing, and go to the park tomorrow! Yukio: Yes, let's do that. Kazuya: Uh, yes, that sounds good. Maiko: Jaa nee!* *See ya! [Yukio, Maiko, and Kazuya go their separate ways. As Kazuya walks away, the same boy from lunch approaches him.] Student: Yukimasa-san? Kazuya: Yes, ahhh...? Student: Takada Junichi, remember? I wanted to thank you for helping me out at lunch. I think I did well on the test because of your help. Kazuya: You're welcome. Junichi: Would it be alright, if it's not too much trouble, if I played with you sometime too? Kazuya: [Smiles.] Please do. Playing is more fun with more people, right? Junichi: Hai! [Junichi departs, and Kazuya heads home.] [Cut to the exterior of Ikemoto's apartment building. A black Nissan sports car, with Akane driving and Ikemoto in the passenger seat, pulls up and parks. The two women get out of the car. Ikemoto is carrying a folder.] Akane: Tomorrow is Saturday, Kazuya. You should be spending the day with Ikemoto, and looking for an opportunity to bump heads with her. Ikemoto: I know. I want this to end. [Waves her folder.] Being Ikemoto is hard work! [The two enter Ikemoto's apartment. Kazuya is already there, pacing back and forth in the living room.] Akane: Tadaima.* *I'm back. Kazuya: [Approaches Ikemoto.] Tell me, what happened with your meeting with Ezaki-kacho? Ikemoto: Oh, that? Ezaki-kacho wasn't happy, and I don't think he likes Arima, so I told him I wanted to show him that Arima was capable. You know, just give him a chance, like you got. Kazuya: Arima? That man is borderline incompetent! I can't believe people will think I think well of him. Ikemoto: Oh, and Jackson & Stein decided to stop working with your company. That means less work for you! Kazuya: [Angrily.] But I work on a commission basis! I need that work! You don't understand anything about the working world. Ikemoto: [Intensely.] I know one thing: no one at the office likes you. Kazuya: What? Ikemoto: How can you not notice that everyone at the office respects your talents, but no one wants to spend any more time with you than they have to? Kazuya: And how could you not notice that you're surrounded by kids who just might want to be your friend, but all you do is turn them away with your attitude and your stupid pranks? And that girlfriend of yours... Ikemoto: She's not my girlfriend! Kazuya: ...she joins you in your stupid pranks just because she wants to spend time with you! Akane: Calm down, you two! [Kazuya and Ikemoto stare at each other, ready to issue another retort, then think about what each other said.] Ikemoto: At least tomorrow is Saturday. No more boring office work! Kazuya: I work Saturdays. All the dedicated workers put in at least a half day on Saturday. Meanwhile, you have a play date at the playground. Ikemoto: [Waves her arms, with the folder in one hand.] Work Saturday? I can't believe you! Kazuya: Wait. What's in that folder? Ikemoto: This? It's a report you did on American car companies. I wanted to ask you about it. Kazuya: You? Why? Ikemoto: One of your coworkers didn't think highly of your analysis here. [Points out a section in the middle of the report.] Kazuya: [Looks at the report crossly.] That's not the right analysis. [Looks at the cover and sees her name.] What is the meaning of this? Where did you get this? Ikemoto: It was in your files. Your coworker Ginga said he'd take the blame for this analysis if I gave him some information on the Shimizu acquisition. Kazuya: Ginga? I don't trust him. Ikemoto: I've known him all of three days, and I don't trust him either. I think he's trying to make you look bad. Kazuya: [Angrily.] Ginga _is_ trying to make me look bad. [Calms down.] But I should have a copy of that report in my files here. We need to stop arguing and work together to stop him, whatever he's doing. [Kazuya goes to Ikemoto's desk, and searches through some files. He pulls out an identical-looking report, and reviews it.] Kazuya: Yes, this is the right report. Ikemoto: How is it different? Kazuya: It's the _right_ analysis. [Pauses and thinks for a moment.] We'll need to bring this back to the office, but we'll need to wait until after 10 PM, when the office is always empty. Ikemoto: How do you know the office is always empty at 10 PM? [Kazuya glares at her, and realization dawns.] Oh. [Thinking.] Ikemoto-oneechan's life really is boring. [Ikemoto thinks back to what she learned from reading Ginga's mind.] Ikemoto: Say, Ikemoto-neechan, if Ginga placed this report in your files, then do you think he replaced Ezaki-kacho's copy of the report too? Kazuya: [Nods.] You're right. I'll need to replace it, too. I'll go make a photocopy of this report. Ikemoto: We'll go make the copy. We're working together, remember? Akane: All right then, I'll start dinner. [Ikemoto and Kazuya leave the apartment as Akane starts the rice cooker. Following that, Akane turns on the television, and begins flipping channels. She stops on a news program.] Television newscast: And now, continuing coverage of the impact of Typhoon 16. The Kamogawa and Wada prefectural governments continue to assess damage to coastal areas. Preliminary damage estimates are in excess of 1 billion yen. The Diet is debating additional relief measures. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has called off all rescue efforts, declaring all unaccounted ships lost at sea. Matsumoto Corporation chief Hayashibara Takao has vowed to personally fund search efforts for his son's boat. [The television cuts to a clip of the elder Hayashibara.] Takao: I am unwilling to give up on my son, or the friends who put their trust in him. We will continue the search until... [Akane turns off the television. Slowly, she walks to the phone and dials.] Akane: Takashi-ojisan? This is Akane.... [Cut to the parking garage of the Mason financial corporation. Ikemoto's black Nissan 300ZX turns into the garage, driving too fast. Its tires squeal as the car makes the turn, and the driver overcorrects, almost turning the car into the wall of the garage. The tires squeal again as the car brakes hard, then lurches forward. Ikemoto is at the wheel, and Kazuya looks both angry and frightened as he yells at Ikemoto. With a final lurch, the car comes to a stop, straddling the line between two parking spaces. The doors opens, and Ikemoto and Kazuya step out.] Ikemoto: See, I told you I could handle driving at night. Kazuya: [Still pale.] "Handle?" You almost killed us five times! Ikemoto: I think you're overreacting. I mean, I put us back into the correct lane right after I realized my mistake. Kazuya: There was a truck coming right at us! Ikemoto: Anyway, we're here safely. Let's go in and replace that report. [Ikemoto starts to walk away. Kazuya grabs her arm.] Kazuya: You idiot! We can't just walk in there without a plan! Ikemoto: But you said you work late all the time! Kazuya: But I don't bring some kid to the office! There's no way the security guard will let me pass. Now let's think rationally here. The elevator in the parking garage rises to the lobby, but doesn't go any higher. You flash your badge to the security guard, then walk to the main elevators. Ikemoto: What about a back door? Kazuya: [Thinks.] There would be a docking bay for trucks, for deliveries and such. But I don't have access to those areas. And there are emergency exits, but those have alarms. Ikemoto: Is there room to hide in the elevator? Kazuya: Yes, especially for someone child-sized. Ikemoto: Then let's go! You keep the elevator door open and hide in the elevator, and I'll create a distraction. When the guard is distracted, you sneak out and go to the other elevator. Kazuya: That will never work. Ikemoto: Trust me. Kazuya: [Incredulously.] Trust you? Ikemoto: I'm sure some trouble will happen. Kazuya: [Sighs.] I'll go along with it, only because I can't think of anything else to do. [Kazuya and Ikemoto enter the elevator and press the button for the lobby. The elevator rises. Kazuya presses himself to the corner of the elevator. The door opens to the Mason financial corporation lobby. A security guard is reading a newspaper. Surprised, he looks up as Ikemoto enters.] Ikemoto: [Confidently presents her ID badge.] I'm just coming to pick up some work I forgot. Security guard: Hai, Ikemoto-shunin. Ikemoto: [Looks around.] So, how are you this evening? Security guard: Huh? Oh, I'm fine. [Ikemoto spies an unattended janitor's cart across the room.] Ikemoto: Have a good night. [Ikemoto turns to walk to the main elevators. As she does so, she uses telekinesis to cause the janitor's cart to start rolling.] [The security guard returns to his newspaper. Shortly thereafter, he notices the janitor's cart rolling towards a potted plant and the front windows.] Security guard: Taihen! [The security guard drops his newspaper, jumps up, and runs to grab the cart. Kazuya slips out of the elevator and hurries to the main elevator. Ikemoto is holding the door open.] Kazuya: How did you.... Ikemoto: Shhh! [The two finish the elevator ride in silence. The doors open, and Ikemoto sticks her head out.] Ikemoto: Looks like no one's here. Kazuya: Good. [He steps out.] Let's go. [Ikemoto and Kazuya walk into Ezaki-kacho's office. They leave the lights off, relying on the fluorescent lights from the office floor.] Kazuya: [Pointing.] The research papers would be in that file cabinet. Ikemoto: Then let's get it! [Ikemoto grabs the top drawer and pulls, but it doesn't budge.] Ikemoto: It's locked. Kazuya: Shimatta!* [Looks over Ezaki's desk.] Maybe his key is here somewhere. *Damn! [Ikemoto concentrates and turns the lock with her telekinesis. At the same time, she pounds the file cabinet with the heel of her hand.] Kazuya: Oh, come on. That will never wo.... [Ikemoto opens the top drawer. Kazuya's jaw drops.] Ikemoto: It's all in the technique. [Kazuya and Ikemoto start to search through Ezaki's file cabinet. They freeze as they hear the elevator chime.] Ikemoto: What was that? Kazuya: [Hisses.] Quiet, and hide! [Kazuya pushes Ikemoto under the desk, then crawls in after her. Kazuya is squeezed on top of Ikemoto; they are face to face.] Ikemoto: [Whispers.] Oof, I'm heavy! Kazuya: [Whispers.] This is not the time for that! Ikemoto: I thought you said no one would be here! [They listen, and hear the squeaking of a cart.] Kazuya: The janitor! Ikemoto: How could you forget the cleaning staff? Kazuya: Why would I think of them? They're not important. [The sound comes closer, and both Ikemoto and Kazuya stop whispering. They scarcely breathe as the janitor approaches. Ikemoto notices Ezaki's trash can is not more than two feet from where they're hiding.] Ikemoto: [Thinking.] If they come around the desk to get the trash can, they'll see us! [Ikemoto concentrates, and the trash can floats around to the side of the desk. Then, the door to the office opens wider, and the lights are turned on. While Ikemoto and Kazuya sit paralyzed, the janitor empties the trash, replaces the trash bag, and returns the trash can. He walks out and turns off the light.] Kazuya and Ikemoto: *WHEW* [They continue to wait while the janitor cleans the rest of the floor. Finally, the elevator sounds again, and the floor grows silent. Kazuya and Ikemoto crawl out from under the desk.] Ikemoto: Itee...* [Rubs her legs.] *Owwww... Kazuya: Let's get the report and get out of here. [Kazuya and Ikemoto search through Ezaki's file cabinet.] Kazuya: Found it! [Pulls it out and looks at it.] He did replace this copy too. Ikemoto: We're going to fix that. [They swap the document.] Kazuya: Now how am I going to get past the security guard this time? Ikemoto: Uhhhhhhh.... [Cut to the back of the building. Ikemoto is at the wheel of the car, pulled over at the side of the street. The emergency exit opens, followed by the sounding of a fire alarm. Kazuya dashes out, pulls open the passenger door, and jumps in.] Kazuya: Go go go! [With a peel of rubber, the car zooms away from the scene.] [Cut to morning. At Mason financial group, the floor is almost as busy as on a weekday. Ikemoto steps off the elevator. She exchanges polite greetings with several analysts before sitting down at her desk. Shortly thereafter, Ginga approaches.] Ginga: Good morning, Shunin. I wasn't expecting to see you here today. Ikemoto: I could say the same thing. It's only dedicated workers who put in a half day on Saturday. Ginga: [Looks at Ikemoto crossly.] I was hoping you could provide me with the analysis I requested, but I'm afraid you're still not interested. [Leans in close.] You are aware of the implications for your career? Ikemoto: I am, and I urge you to consider the same. Do you really want to cross me? Ginga. We shall see. [He turns and departs. Ikemoto turns to her work.] [Cut to the Kouryou Park playgrounds. Kazuya spies Maiko and Yukio already there. Maiko runs up to Kazuya, with Yukio following behind her.] Maiko: Kazu-kun! Kazuya: Good morning, Mai-chan! Maiko: Let's play! Kazuya: Play? What? Yukio: [Slaps Kazuya hard on the back.] Tag. You're it. [Maiko and Yukio run off. Kazuya stares at them as if they're crazy, then reluctantly runs after them.] [Cut to Mason financial group, later that morning. Ikemoto is still working as her phone rings.] Ikemoto: Ikemoto desu. Voice of Ezaki: [Louder than normal.] I want you to come to my office now. Ikemoto: Hai, Kacho. [Ikemoto walks to Ezaki's office. When she gets there, she sees Ginga is inside. He smiles wickedly as she enters.] Ezaki: Sit down, Ikemoto. I've been reviewing a report that Ginga brought me. Ikemoto: One of my reports? Ezaki: Yes. I must confess to have not reviewed it carefully when you completed it, because I am looking at it now, and your analysis is clearly wrong. This is very disappointing, Ikemoto. Ikemoto: Please, let me see that. [Ezaki passes her the report. She pages through it, then stops on the changed page.] Ezaki-kacho, this is not my work. I clearly remember my analysis of the Chrysler Corporation, and I reached the opposite conclusion than what is printed here. Ginga: But this is a copy of your report, Shunin. Ikemoto: I insist, it is not. I do not know what Ginga-san is attempting, but.... Ginga: [Interrupts.] Kacho, please. There's little point to this argument. Do you have a copy of this report in your files? Ezaki: Yes, I do. Ginga: [Smiling.] Then let us look at it. Ikemoto: Yes, let's. [Ezaki finds the report and looks at it. He compares the two documents closely. Then, he sets them down.] Ezaki: Ginga. Ginga: Hai, Kacho? Ezaki: This report you have provided is not a copy of Ikemoto's work. Explain yourself. Ginga: Wha- what did you say? Ezaki: Ikemoto, I apologize for bringing you in like this. You may go. And please close the door as you leave. Ikemoto. Hai, Kacho. [Gets up.] Ezaki: Ginga, if you think you can cover your own mediocre performance by impugning the work of my top analyst.... [Ikemoto almost skips out as the sound of Ezaki chewing Ginga out fades with the closing door.] [Cut to Kouryou Park. A bus pulls up, and Ikemoto is among four people who disembark.] Ikemoto: Now that boring work is out of the way, and I saved Ikemoto's career, it's time to play. [Ikemoto walks around the playground for a while, then sees Kazuya and his two friends. Yukio is running after Maiko and Kazuya, who are running in different directions. Kazuya looks happier than he's been in years.] Yukio: [Turns to chase Kazuya.] I'll get you yet, Kazuya! Kazuya: Catch me if you can! [Kazuya scrambles up the monkey bars. As he climbs over the top, he sees Ikemoto approach.] Kazuya: [Thinking.] Eh? What is Kazuya doing here? Yukio: Now's my chance! [The monkey bars shake as Yukio's bigger body jumps on them. Kazuya hastily turns, and sees him approach. He tries to scramble down the monkey bars, but his foot misses one of the rungs, and he loses his balance.] Kazuya: Shimatta!* *Damn! Ikemoto: Abunai!* *Look out! (literally, Danger!) [Ikemoto rushes forward to catch the falling Kazuya. Knowing she will come up short, she dives for him. Kazuya tumbles as he falls, and lands headfirst on Ikemoto. There is a shock of electricity as their heads collide. Then, Kazuya rolls away.] Kazuya: Itee! Ikemoto: Itee! Yukio: Are you all right? [Ikemoto picks herself up, feeling very wrong, then recognizes she is looking at Kazuya. She looks at her hands.] Ikemoto: I'm fine, Yukio-kun. Yukio: Huh? How do you know my name? Ikemoto: Ah, well, you know.... Maiko: Kazu-kun! [Kazuya stands up, and is happy to see that Maiko is around his height, not shorter.] Kazuya: Mai-chan! [Kazuya and Maiko link hands and jump up and down, but Kazuya quits as he grasps his head in pain.] Ikemoto: I came to watch Kazuya-kun on behalf of his sister. Right now, I think he needs to go home and rest. There is no sense in risking further injury. Kazuya: But I want to stay... [Grasps head in pain again.] I guess you're right, Ikemoto-oneechan. Bye, Yukio-kun, Mai-chan! You owe me a play date! [Cut to the front of the Yukimasa residence. Akane opens the door as Kazuya and Ikemoto approach.] Kazuya: [Waves.] Oneechan! I feel a lot better now! [Telepathically to Akane.] We bumped heads accidentally at the park, so we're back to normal. Ikemoto: I think we both need some rest after that accident. After all, I'm having trouble remembering these past days. Kazuya: Uhhh... me too. Ikemoto: Please don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I never see you again. Kazuya: ... Ikemoto: But thank you. I don't know how a kid like you did it, but you helped save my job. [To herself.] But I'll need to work extra hard to make up for losing the Jackson & Stein account. Kazuya: And you saved me at juku. Ikemoto: If you listen to what I said, you will do well in school and life. And if I listen to what you said, then maybe I'll find a little more joy in life. Kazuya: Don't worry, I'll remember what you said, Oneechan. Ikemoto: Now, I need to get back to my life. I say this even though nothing special happened this week. Kazuya: Right. Nothing special happened this week. Bye! [Ikemoto turns and walks off. Kazuya heads inside.] Akane: Kazuya, there's something I need to tell you about Kyosuke's boat trip. I didn't want to talk about it earlier, but you need to hear it....
